However, for your safety while sailing the Canadian arctic, we would like to invite you to send us the following information a couple of days before entering our waters:

– Vessel identification:
– Vessel characteristics:
– Methods of communication – Radios/SAT-PHONES/emails:
– Garmin ID or alternative tracker:
– Life saving equipment such as number of life jackets, survival suits and colour:
– Life raft(s) and colour:
– EPIRB (yes/no):
– Flares and other safety equipment:
– Emergency contact:

From mid-May till mid-December, we are available 24/7 by radio or via phone +1-867-979-5269 or email iqanordreg@innav.gc.ca and we encourage you, if you wish, to send us position report daily or at a frequency that suits you best.

We will provide you with any navigating information you find useful if we have it available.

For your information, radio communications in the arctic are mostly MF and HF [3]. Our VHF coverage (CH16) extends around the communities of Iqaluit, Resolute, Cambridge Bay and Tuktoyaktuk.

If you are going around Hudson Bay, you might want to also look at Nunavik/Quebec restrictions.

Even if you are not a passenger vessels, you might be interested in reading the Transport Canada Guidelines for Passenger Vessels Operating in the Canadian Arctic [4] as it contains a lot of information about communities, wildlife, etc.
